To expose your feelings is to risk exposing your true self.

To place your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return.

To live is to risk dying.

To believe is to risk despair.

To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

The people who risk nothing do nothing, have nothing, and are nothing.

They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live.

Chained by their attitudes, they are slaves; they have forfeited their freedom.

Only a person who risks is free.

Stay Focused on Your Dreams

Faith plus focus plus follow-through

equals mission accomplished!

In earlier writings I shared an idea with you: faith plus focus plus follow-through equals success . Now I would like to revise the final word of that line so that it reads: faith plus focus plus follow-through equals… mission accomplished .

Goals reached; desires fulfilled; success achieved; purpose realized; vision experienced; mission accomplished; dreams coming true: however you put it, the secret in making success happen is often found in this one discipline “focus.”

In this chapter, let’s focus on “focus.” To focus is to turn your well-defined mission into a determined, destiny-directing goal. It means to passionately concentrate your creative energy on the bull’s-eye of your target.

As a child growing up on an Iowa farm, I remember the special times in the fall, when there were the bonfires and marshmallow roasts. All the leaves were raked and piled together with the dead sticks. Then Dad would say, “Who is going to light the bonfire?” “I will! I will!” was my eager response and I would get my small magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays onto a dried leaf. We would all watch as a small spiral of smoke would soon drift upward and then a bright yellow flame.

Something like that happens when the variety of talents, passions, and values that swirl within a single human mind come together. When these forces become a creative coalition, focused and magnified on an inspiring dream, they release tremendous energy. When you bring together positive emotions and passionately focus them on your goal, you create consuming, burning drive.

Then the vision becomes a venture!

But staying focused is a continuing challenge. The serious athlete wrestles with staying focused when his friends invite him to join them at the beach for a weekend of fun. The aspiring pianist focuses on long hours at the piano instead of watching entertaining television programs. Early morning practices conflict with sleeping an extra hour. Hours of concentrated study and work can quickly squelch enthusiasm, unless the focus from start to finish is on the goal and the mission is accomplished. Otherwise, a multitude of distractions will siphon off your energy and drive.

When you announce your new and exciting dream with friends and family, do not be surprised if they do not immediately share your enthusiasm. Your new goals may compete with their spoken or unspoken plans. They may have their own agenda that they hope will gain your support.
